Voices Across Boundaries: a multifaith review of current affairs is a general interest magazine providing a venue in which people representing diverse traditions and beliefs can enter into dialogue and share their insights into social, cultural, ethical and spiritual questions. Launched in May 2003, Voices Across Boundaries publishes leading minds, award-wining writers and private citizens from within Canada and around the world. While not an academic journal, the magazine maintains high standards of writing and analysis, and is directed at informed general readers who are curious about the world in all its complexity.

Themes

Voices publishes essays, art, fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. The centrepiece of each issue is a theme section, and the theme is approached in a number of dimensions: personal experience, individual reflection, rigorous analysis and creative expression.

While each issue also contains some nontheme articles on a variety of topics, articles have a better chance of being accepted if they fit in with a theme Voices is covering. Upcoming themes are:
  • "Quest for the Cure: Healing and Health in the Contemporary World"
  • "The Fact of the Matter: Praying at the Shrine of Materialism"
  • "Passing Through: Celebrating the Cycle of Life"
  • "Restorative Justice"
  • "Globalization"
E-mail voices@acrossboundaries.net for writers' deadlines for these issues.

Features

Voices also publishes essay-length and brief book reviews, arts coverage and criticism, and a series of regular features. The features cover prayers, traditional and personal, from different faith traditions; holy people (historical, mythic or contemporary) in different traditions; sacred text; and religion and the media.

Word Length

  • Major feature articles: 1,500 to 3,000 words in length
  • Book reviews:
    -- Essay-length reviews: 1,000 to 2,000 words
    -- Brief reviews: 500 to 750 words
  • Regular features occupying one or two pages of the magazine:
-- Prayers: from 3 to 300 words each
    -- Holy Person: 750 words
    -- Sacred Story: 750 words
-- Religion and the Media: 750 to 1,500 words

Relationship with Writers

Most articles for Voices Across Boundaries are commissioned on a contract basis. Each writer is asked to sign an understanding with respect to publication, which specifies deadlines, word length, payment, assignment of rights and other matters.

Voices prefers to receive articles in electronic form. Articles should be e-mailed to voices@acrossboundaries.net. If that is not possible, a letter-quality double-spaced typescript is acceptable by fax at: 519-662-3594.

Each article is reviewed by several editors, and if necessary an editor will be assigned to work with the writer to ensure that the article meets the needs of the magazine. Before publication, the writer has the opportunity to review a proof of the article and make corrections and minor changes in a timely fashion.
